  • Tue Feb 27 '18 09:00 am Kickstarter : Plant Studios' Vibe Light: "Recording - Do Not Enter"

Photo of Studio A Live Room Recording warning light
CLICK HERE to access Kickstarter campaign This is an opportunity to bring a piece of music history into your creative space. It will make a great gift for your favorite audiophile, recording engineer, producer and/or music fan! This sign used to serve as a warning "Recording : Do Not Enter" above the door to Studio A Live Room in the legendary "Plant" in Sausalito. From the early 70's to early 2008, many celebrated and successful music artists walked under this decorated light panel image into the live room of Studio A. Artists as diverse as Kronos Quartet, Rick James, Sly and the Family Stone, Dave Matthews Band and Metallica walked these hallowed halls, where they absorbed the legendary "vibe" that inspired the soundtrack of our lives. This historic sign is one of the few items rescued from The Plant Studios when the business was forced out of the 2200 Bridgeway space in Spring of 2008. Although ten years have passed, we still hold on to the dream of returning to the space and restoring the studios, so future generations can make some music history of their own. Until that day comes, we are thrilled to share this legendary "vibe" sign with the hope that it will inspire musicians all over the world to create some great music... -- Arne and Mari

    • We work primarily with singer/songwriters and self contained bands that contain singer/songwriters;

    • As recording engineer on over 500 albums I get the hit sounds that make your record stand out

Overdubs / Mixing usually completed in a private studio in Mill Valley.

  • Fri Apr 22 '16 5:26 pm Prince Rogers Nelson 6/7/1958- 4/21/2016

    We honor a genius
    June 7, 1958 - April 21, 2016

As many of you know, Prince recorded his first album at 2200 Bridgeway in Sausalito, while it was The Record Plant. Arne recalls fond memories of working with Clare Fischer on many of his works, starting in 1982, before taking ownership of The Plant.

"He was the Mozart of our time," states Arne, "Truly a gifted entertainer, musician, songwriter and singer. I've never seen anyone else with that much talent."

We join the world in mourning this incalculable loss while we celebrate the gifts he gave us.

  • Mon Mar 23 '09 09:37 am SPRING REVELATION!

    Revelation
On Friday, the first day of spring, a package arrived for The Plant. It was a brand new platinum record, "REVELATION" from Journey, a double album which was recorded in late 2007. How very interesting that this particular platinum record would arrive a few short weeks after we discovered that all The Plant's past gold and platinum records had been so rudely and unjustly taken off the walls of 2200 Bridgeway. The next day, a small group of family and friends helped us with the daunting task of removing what remains of The Plant's property from 2200 Bridgeway - it felt like spring cleaning on steroids. Lots of emotion and bittersweet memories and it was a lot more difficult that we thought it would be. I was in the A Lounge, packing up kitchen items that had been used by just about every famous musician that had ever been through the place, still holding onto the hope that someday we would be able to put it all back. As I walked into the front lobby, I noticed Arne standing with a man I did not know. Placing a box with the others in the staging area for the truck, I listened as he shared stories of the music that was made there, and realized, that amidst all the chaos on what had to be one of the saddest days he had ever spent in that space, my husband was taking the time to give a stranger who just wandered in the door, a tour. I found that moment extremely ironic, for many reasons that are too complex to explain in this posting - and I then remembered that with every ending, comes a new beginning, and why "spring" is called "spring" - at that moment - I guess you could say I had a "revelation" - Definition of spring, from Wikipedia - "In spring, the axis of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun and the length of daylight rapidly increases for the relevant hemisphere. The hemisphere begins to warm significantly causing new plant growth to "spring forth," giving the season its name."

NOW is the time to act to preserve a cultural icon - support the ARTSBORETUM project - the music arts incubator based at the former location of The Plant Studios. We are no longer operating at the Sausalito location, and only have a limited amount of time to preserve the building.
Our goal is to bring The Plant Studios back, greener than ever as part of the ARTSBORETUM project - a new non-profit model of the music industry that is fair to the artists and cultivates a more diverse crop of music for the listener.
The CAPITAL CAMPAIGN is ongoing from now until the end of this year, and all donations are tax deductible. For more information on the plan, please visit this link about the ARTSBORETUM - Our vision is all about preserving a cultural icon and cultivating independent music makers by creating a community space that intersects music, art and sustainability. We believe that music is a a vehicle for change. We also believe in cultivating the true creative vision of artists, in music with melody and musicianship, in art that speaks, in respecting our planet. We aim to encourage the convergence of art and technology, of music and technology, especially when that technology has the potential to reduce the impact that humans have on this planet. We believe in nurturing the creative spirit and engaging audiences in that creativity.
Thank you for your support of our music arts community's past and future legacy.

Congratulations to Thriving Ivory and producer Chris Manning, on the success of the band's self titled release. Their video for their single "Angels On the Moon" is currently enjoying regular rotation on VH1. Please visit their website, and vote for them for Yahoo Music's "Who's Next?"
Says drummer, Paul Neidermeier, after he signed our online petition, "...we're so happy that we got to be part of the legacy. The Plant is one of the last honest, classic studios around. Would hate to see it go. The world needs more places like The Plant Studios!..."
In addition to being happy that the band is enjoying some much deserved success, we are all especially proud of Chris Manning, who started his engineering career at The Plant, spending many hours as assistant engineer to Arne Frager. Says Chris of his experience at The Plant, "Arne...taught me much of what I know today." Manning's thoughts on the studio's current situation as stated after HE also signed the petition, "I live in Marin and The Plant is how I got my career start in the mid 90's. The Plant and the incredibly talented people who walk through its doors are really A National Treasure. It is the only place of its kind to learn how to make hit records.. Recording schools cant teach you this, only assisting the pro's in a world-class studio can. Please preserve this rich treasure that has given us so many hits, and memories..... music is the soundtrack to our lives. The Plant is where it starts."
If you would like to assist in our efforts to bring The Plant back to its Sausalito location, then please visit our non-profit website. And be sure to check out this really cool picture of thriving ivory...

Yes - not only did you hear Journey's "Dont Stop Believin" - that WAS the Noisettes you heard on the final episode of the Sopranos!!!! It's hard to begin to describe this band, except to say that The Noisettes ROCK! It's really great to hear a band that rocks this hard, that is so diverse and interesting with singer who can actually SING her heart out. It's like Chrissie Hynde meets Led Zeppelin, with a dose of Gwen Stefani thrown in for a modern twist - go out and get it -What's the Time, Mr. Wolf? NOW! BTW, portions of this amazing work were tracked in Studio B, the tracking room with the satin and psychedelic puffy clouds on the walls and ceiling...Robert Gatley assisted in the engineering duties.

  • Tue Oct 10 '06 4:51 pm Franti Releases Yell Fire: "Franti's best album yet."

    2006 | Franti | Yellfire
It was big fun having Michael Franti in Studio B, tracking Spearhead live, aided by the engineering expertise of Arne Frager and Robert Gatley.

From Amazon.com: One thing you know you'll get from Franti and Spearhead is a certain kind of crystal clarity--on the production, musicianship, and, of course, in the righteous political message. Released two years after Franti traveled by himself to war-ravaged Baghdad, Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, each of these songs deals with the human cost of war poignantly and pointedly. The lyrics may seem simplistic when removed from the songs--"Those who start wars never fight them/And those who fight wars never like them" and "The F15 is a homicide bomber"--but very few artists have the honesty and balls that Franti does. Bless him for that. Spearhead might lose credibility with some by tying Peter Tosh's chant to "legalize it" to their call for revolution, but those folks are not in the target demographic, anyway. Those who are will thoroughly dig this. From the jam band accents of "Time to Go Home" to the reggae of "Light Up Ya Lighter" to the U2-ish ballad "I Know I'm Not Alone," it's easily Franti's best album yet. --Mike McGonigal

  • Tue Aug 01 '06 12:17 pm Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy - Adieu, False Heart
To say that we were thrilled to have this project grace these hallowed halls would be an understatement.

Mr. Paczosa, thanks again for the opportunity to be a part of such a fine project. Robert Gatley assisted.

This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass. --Don McLeese

  • Fri Apr 28 '06 12:29 pm Musselwhite's Latest Now Available

    2006 | Charlie Musselwhite | Delta Hardware
We were very honored that the legendary Charlie Musselwhite and his producer Chris Goldsmith chose Studio B to record his latest endeavor, "Delta Hardware." Robert Gatley assisted.

We have heard the record, and are sure that Charlie has another winner on his hands. The work features Charlie Musselwhite on vocals, harmonica, and even electric guitar on one tune: "Town To Town." Chris "Kid" Andersen handles the remainder of the guitar work, with Randy Bermudes on bass and June Core on drums.

    From Charlie's website.

Shot through with attitude, the songs on DELTA HARDWARE feel rough-hewn and tough, just as they should for a guy "born in Mississippi [and] raised up in Tennessee." Charlie cuts loose a good time in Clarksdale, pipes up for the downtrodden, and gives a lover the ol' heave-ho. This is raw, passionate music from a howlin' blues legend who's still invigorated by a youthful spirit.

It's Charlie's mix of wild country abandon seasoned by years of playing urban electric blues in Chicago that spurs the likes of Ben Harper, Tom Waits and Gov't Mule to welcome Musselwhite onto their stages and records. That same brash, blues/rock rebel vibe was Dan Akroyd's inspiration for his Elwood Blues persona, and it's what has won Musselwhite a pile of blues awards and earned the admiration and respect of his own heroes: Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. John Lee was even the best man at Charlie's wedding.

Pulled, like the albums of R.L. Burnside and the North Mississippi Allstars, out of the storied Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, DELTA HARDWARE is a mixture of songs written over the past few years and ideas fleshed out in the studio, and includes a new twist on the longtime live staple, Clarksdale Boogie. True to the blues as an expression of a range of honest emotions and stories, DELTA HARDWARE ranges from upbeat jewels like the party track Church Is Out to more socially conscious songs like Black Water and The Invisible Ones. With the latter two tracks, inspired by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Charlie paints a stark, honest tribute to those suffering in and around New Orleans and in his home state: "Old black water lappin' at your back door/Hello America, better get ready for more/Trouble, trouble all around here/ just too tired to shed one tear/ Black Water/ It's a sign of our times."

"Things just seem to be falling apart," Musselwhite says. "And I think people are waking up to that. I think people are starting to see that there's something really rotten going on." Admittedly, the political arena is an odd and uncomfortable arena for him to step into. "I don't want to be offensive to anybody. I respect everybody and their opinion, and I hope they respect mine."

Backed by his touring band, Musselwhite, now based in Sonoma County, California, lends his guitar skills to one track on DELTA HARDWARE and otherwise just goes stompin, blowin' and shouting his way through the album's 10 tracks. The album walks the line between rock and electric country blues, sometimes playing it straight, sometimes taking new turns. On Clarksdale Boogie, he offers up a virtual mantra for his life behind his first-ever use of a drum and bass loop: "Meet me where they play good blues." The crowd noise in this track is sampled from a night at Red's juke joint in Clarksdale.

Over the years, Musselwhite has released dozens of albums and has contributed to countless others including guesting on Bonnie Raitt's Grammy® award-winning Longing In Their Hearts, The Blind Boys of Alabama's Grammy-winning SPIRIT OF THE CENTURY, Tom Waits' MULE VARIATIONS and even playing the driving harmonica on INXS' SUICIDE BLONDE. He was the longtime compadre and musical partner to his friend John Lee Hooker. His recent tour and recording sessions with Ben Harper have led to live and studio tracks featuring Charlie on the limited edition bonus disc of Ben's soon-to-be released BOTH SIDES OF THE GUN. Musical institutions have honored Musselwhite, too. With 18 W.C. Handy awards to his credit and 6 Grammy nominations, he is firmly entrenched in musical history. Musselwhite has also been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Monterey Blues Festival and the San Javier Jazz Festival in Spain and the Mississippi Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. Perhaps most meaningful to him personally, in 1987, he conquered a long-running battle with alcoholism.

Musselwhite's version of the blues ventures far beyond conventional honky-tonk — though the Harley Davidsons lined up outside Musselwhite's gigs testify that Musselwhite has what it takes to rock the house. Musselwhite himself is simply interested in music with feeling — as he puts it, "music from the heart": "For me, it's about the feeling, and connecting with people. And blues, if it's real blues, is loaded with feeling. And it ain't about technique either, it's about truth, connecting to the truth and communicating with people."

That connection has been particularly strong with his fans from the start. "I've had Vietnam vets tell me that my music was important to them while they were in Vietnam. I've had people who've had problems with alcohol talk to me about quitting, and tell me that I inspired them to quit, I've had couples tell me that they met at one of my shows and got married years after."

With DELTA HARDWARE, Musselwhite says simply, "I'm keepin' it real. For the listener, I hope it's like a journey, I hope each tune takes 'em to another little place, and I hope at the end they're glad they went."

  • Tue Dec 13 '05 12:15 pm Carrie Underwood Makes History With Some Hearts

    2005 | Underwood | Some Hearts
American Idol winner Carrie Underwood made history when her debut 19 Recordings/Arista Records album, Some Hearts, moved more than 314,000 units in its first week of release, making her the highest debuting new artist in the country genre since SoundScan began.

When the artist was here adding vocals for several tracks, our own Mike Boden assisted.

Underwood also earned the distinction of selling more units than any other debut female American Idol star to date. In addition, her album is the highest charting album for a debut artist in 2005.

  • Wed Nov 16 '05 12:55 pm Carrie Underwood Aims For Crossover Success

    2005 | Underwood | Some Hearts
NASHVILLE - Unlike the winners before her, current "American Idol" champ Carrie Underwood is gunning for success in not only the pop format, but the country arena too.

Thus, Arista Nashville, a division of RCA Label Group, is partnering with 19 Recordings and J Records in New York to promote Underwood's November 15 debut, "Some Hearts."

Underwood already has scored with "Inside Your Heaven," this year's best-selling retail single. The song -- which has sold 434,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan -- topped the Billboard Hot 100 in July because of its strong sales. Now she will try to earn fans on country radio.

"It's a dual approach," says RCA Label Group chairman Joe Galante, who says his Nashville office will handle country radio promotion for Underwood's single "Jesus, Take the Wheel," as well as other marketing and promotion efforts in the country community.

The J Records staff is handling the album's title track for top 40 and adult contemporary radio as well as taking the record to retail. "It's a split effort between the two of us," Galante says.

Underwood is depending on both labels to shepherd her efforts. "They know what they're doing," she says. "I'm a country singer, but because of my exposure on 'American Idol,' I might tend to cross over naturally."

In recording the album, the Checotah, Okla., native, who is buying a home in Nashville, says it was important to "keep things as country as possible."

"Everybody seems to have their arms wide open to me, so that's been great," says Underwood, who admits her first Nashville experience was not so positive. At 15, she was turned down by labels on Music Row.

Could the two-format push hurt Underwood in the long run, especially with possessive programmers who tend to want an artist to commit solely to their format?

"My experience is that country gets upset when you take a record to top 40 or AC before you take it to them or if you're working a record simultaneously," Galante says, "but we're not. We're working two separate records."

Arista/J Records executive VP and general manager Tom Corson believes the dual approach will pay off.

"Yes, it's been awhile since an artist has been able to straddle the country and pop formats, but this is an opportunity and a time for radio to serve their audiences, and we have the records," he says. "We see it as an opportunity to reach the broadest possible audience, because very few listeners are totally format-centric in any format. We think we can have a win-win."

"Jesus, Take the Wheel" is off to a great start on country radio, debuting at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It is the first time a newcomer has debuted in the top 40 on that chart with a track from a debut album since Billboard adopted Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems' monitored airplay information as the basis for its radio charts in 1990. The song is No. 23 this week.

"I'm not preaching," Underwood says of the tune. "It's just a beautiful song I figured a lot of people could relate to whether they believe in God or not. Everybody has had a time in their life when they needed help with something."

Galante sees Underwood's "Idol" victory as a win for the country format in general. "There are a lot of people in New York and L.A. who don't recognize the power of the format," he says. "It certainly was evident the night she won."

Underwood is not the first contestant to take the power of "Idol" to country. Former Marine Josh Gracin placed fourth overall in the second season of "Idol" and subsequently signed with Lyric Street Records. His self-titled debut disc has been certified gold and has placed three top five singles on Hot Country Songs, including the No. 1 "Nothin' to Lose."
